HIGHTIDE
ABOUT HIGHTIDE
Seaswells, the College of Coastal Georgia's journal of art and literature, has served as a place for the college's students and alumni to present their artistic endeavors for yearly editions since 1967. In 2017, the staff of Seaswells set forth to create a companion website, HIGHTIDE, that would expand the scope of the journal to include submissions from the Coastal Georgia region and undergraduate students nationwide. HIGHTIDE's first release was published in October 2017 as a preview issue in support of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
ABOUT SEASWELLS
The first volume of Seaswells was published by Brunswick Junior college students during the winter quarter of 1967. Eight editors were listed on the title page, and the 30-page magazine included 22 poems and one essay by nine different students. Just two years later, in 1969, the magazine had grown to 48 pages, and Phyllis Barr was the editor. not only had the size grown, but the magazine also included photographs. In 1970, Barr and Shaw mcveigh were co-editors, and Barr wrote the poem “SEASWELLS,” which was printed on the title page of the magazine that spring. Barr’s poem has appeared on the title page or on one of the first few pages of Seaswells ever since. In 1977, charles and Phyllis Barr began another tradition, the Barr Poetry Award. They created an endowment to fund a cash prize for the winner. In 1982, second- and third-place awards in the contest were added. To this day, the Barrs’ endowment continues to help fund the First Place award in the Barr Poetry contest. The Austin/garner Prose contest was similarly endowed by Dr. John W. teel, the college’s second president, upon his retirement in 1990. In naming the contest, Dr. teel chose to honor Dr. maryjane Austin Spivey and Dr. hugh m. garner. Dr. Spivey was the much loved and respected Dean of Academic Affairs from 1973 to 1979 who, in may 1979, lost a brief battle against cancer. Dr. garner was an outstanding leader during the college’s early years, serving as Dr. teel’s controller; he was also highly regarded as a business professor.

JOIN THE TEAM
Hello, thank you for indicating your interest in joining the Seaswells staff! We have opportunities available at two levels of involvement: affiliates (unlimited) and core (one funded and one unfunded position open).
Core Staff
If you are interested in joining our core staff, you must join the one credit course JOUR 1000 (this credit does not apply toward graduation, but the grade you earn in the class does factor into your GPA). Don’t worry that it is past add/drop – I can still add you. If you are already taking 15 hours or more, there is no fee associated with signing up for this course, and you can apply for the one available unfunded position. If you are taking fewer than 15 hours, the course will cost $100, but we can fund one more student with a student leadership stipend to cover this cost.
Core staff members meet once a week on Mondays from 1:30 until 2:20, they carry out an additional two hours (sometimes fewer, sometimes more) of work per week, and they attend and help facilitate our events, as well as CCGA events in which we are involved. Other tasks include gathering submissions, organizing and reading through submissions, working together to accept or reject submissions, keeping up with Seaswells correspondence, online communication with other Seaswells staff members in D2L between meetings, journal layout, and others as needs arise.
In order to join our core staff, email me back by 5 PM on Friday, September 23. Note that we have a preference/need for people interested in and/or with experience writing poetry. In your email, clearly state (1) whether you are applying for the unfunded position or the funded position. If you are applying for the funded position, indicate if you would like to also be considered for the unfunded position (in the event someone else obtains the funded position). Be sure to also (2) indicate your preferred genre(s) (poetry, prose, photography, art), and (3) include a sample of your own work (required if you work in these genres – otherwise simply state that you are interested in these genres but do not create your own work in the genres). Finally, include (4) a 200-400 word statement explaining why you wish to join Seaswells and any related experience you may have.
Affiliate
If you are interested in being an affiliate, you will be an active member of the club, and you will be asked to attend approximately one meeting per month (most likely on a Monday from 1:30 until 2:20). You will also help motivate your peers to submit to the journal, you will attend (or even help facilitate) workshops and other events we will be offering, and you will help out in other ways as needs arise. You are also, of course, encouraged to submit your own work to the journal.
In order to become an affiliate, simply email me back (by Friday, September 23 preferred, but you may contact us later than that as well), letting me know you would like to do so, and we will keep you in the loop.
